State of Streaming Protocols 2026: HTTP/3 Crosses the Halfway Mark, AV1 Hits 62% Device Coverage
Quarterly adoption digest — HTTP/3/QUIC traffic share, AV1 and HEVC hardware decode coverage, LL-HLS rollout, and which legacy stacks finally got deprecated.
Every quarter we aggregate public telemetry, CDN reports, and browser release notes into a single snapshot of where streaming delivery technology actually stands — as opposed to where conference talks claim it stands. This quarter the headline is a threshold crossing: HTTP/3 now terminates more than half of measured video session handshakes globally.
Adoption Snapshot — Q3 2026
| Technology | Adoption Metric | QoQ Change | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP/3 / QUIC | 54% of video session handshakes | +6 pts | QUIC connection migration now standard on mobile |
| AV1 hardware decode | 62% of active devices | +7 pts | Mid-range SoCs finally shipping decoders |
| HEVC decode | 94% of active devices | +1 pt | Saturated — growth flattened |
| LL-HLS in production | 38% of live platforms | +9 pts | Partial-segment caching now native on major CDNs |
| VP9 (new encodes) | < 4% of new uploads | -5 pts | Effectively in maintenance mode |
HTTP/3’s Inflection Point
The driver isn’t speed on healthy networks — QUIC is roughly bandwidth-equivalent to TCP on clean paths. The driver is connection migration on mobile: QUIC sessions survive the Wi-Fi ↔ cellular handover that hard-kills TCP. Platforms serving mobile-first audiences see rebuffer events drop measurably on handover-heavy segments (commutes, stadiums).
AV1’s Quiet Decade Finally Pays Off
Sixty-two percent hardware decode coverage is the number that changes the economics — it’s the threshold where serving AV1-first with an H.264 fallback becomes cheaper than H.264-only at scale. The remaining holdout segment is older smart TVs, which is precisely the audience segment least sensitive to bitrate efficiency anyway.
“The protocol wars are mostly over. The interesting engineering questions moved up the stack — into prebuffering heuristics, encoder ladders, and the player itself.”
Full methodology, per-region breakdowns, and the raw telemetry tables are published in the quarterly streaming protocol adoption report.
